The Australian Shepherd (affectionately known as "Aussie") is not originally from Australia. It is believed that some Basque farmers took the ancestors of these dogs with them when they immigrated to Australia and then to the United States during the California Gold Rush of 1849. However, the breed as it is known today has developed in the American Southwest over the decades. The Australian dog has been crossed with several breeds with the aim of producing an animal capable of withstanding the temperatures and extreme demands of the American West. Breeding, during this period, was primarily focused on ability - speed, agility, and endurance - rather than appearance, which delayed recognition of the Australian Shepherd as a breed. Australian Shepherds became popular pets after being featured as rodeo performers in the 1950s, and later in Disney films such as "Run Appaloosa Run". Australian Shepherds were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1993.
The Standard Australian Shepherd has a shoulder height of 43 to 58 cm (18 to 23 in) and weighs 16 to 34 kg (35 to 75 lbs). The Australian Shepherd has tightly set triangular ears, a moderately defined stop (the point at which the muzzle meets the forehead), a scissor bite, and brown, blue, or amber eyes (or a combination of these). It has a flat back, a natural or docked bobtail, and oval feet. The Australian Shepherd is slightly longer than it is tall.
The Australian Shepherd's coat ranges from medium to long, with a dense undercoat. It can be straight or slightly wavy and is very weather resistant. The coat is short and soft on the head and legs, with a thick mane around the neck. The Australian Shepherd can be black, red, merle red (dark spots on a light background) or merle blue. All of them may have white markings or golden dots.
The Australian Shepherd is intelligent and eager to learn. He is relaxed, loyal and dedicated, bonding closely with family, even to the point of developing separation anxiety. These dogs are confident and lively; they are known to behave like puppies.
The Australian Shepherd makes an excellent companion for children and other pets, especially if socialized at a young age. He can be shy around strangers, as he is territorial by nature. Australian Shepherds are loving and generous. They get bored easily. The Australian Shepherd can become nervous and destructive without frequent socialization and proper exercise.
The Australian Shepherd requires relatively little grooming, but careful combing is required when shedding hair. Bathe them only when necessary. Australian Shepherds can tolerate hot or cold climates, but must live indoors as they require constant socialization. Aussies have a lifespan of 12 to 13 years and litters of 5 to 8 puppies.
The Australian Shepherd is fun to train because it learns quickly and easily. Aussies are particularly eager to please and adept at a wide variety of sports and games, such as herding, flyball and agility competitions.
Not only does the Australian Shepherd need a lot of exercise, they also need to be busy. The Australian Shepherd is a great companion for active people, especially those who recreate outdoors. Australian Shepherds are fine in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised.
